Learning a second language also gives you the opportunity to understand why other people behave the way they do, and why they believe the things they believe. It also gives you a whole new lens through which to look at and explore your culture.

My perspective on American culture has changed drastically as I have travelled and learned languages. I have seen both the good and bad aspects of my culture.

Although we may not be aware of it, the majority of our understanding of other cultures is based on the media, our governments, and stereotyping.

The problem with this, however, is that when we stop listening and start experiencing, we see that stereotyping is almost always wrong.

In fact, it is very difficult to believe what we have been told in the media, because the media often manipulate us.

When we are open and talk to people from all over the world (online and in person), we see that most Germans are not cold and unfriendly. Brazilians do not just play soccer and party and dance the Samba. French do not only eat croissant and smoke cigarettes. Spaniards do not usually fight bulls.

There are superficial differences between our cultures and histories. But at the core of it all, we are all human beings.
