Language is so much more than just a collection of words or just syntax and vocabulary.

However, that is the way we are instructed in schools.

Our peculiar perception of languages is a result of the traditional school approach to teaching, which places a strong emphasis on memorization and rule learning. This perspective is similar to how we view other academic topics like math and physics.

It operates along these lines:

PASS the examinations, DO the repetitious activities, and MEMORIZE the guidelines.

Unfortunately, this kind of learning makes it hard for us to retain information over time. It’s also quite difficult to maintain motivation to study new things. For this reason, many of us don’t make learning a foreign language a priority once we graduate from school.

So how can we improve our learning? How does the language thrill and motivate us? How can we stop fearing learning and instead start looking forward to it?
