Course Overview

We offer intensive Mandarin language course in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This 80-hours per month course is a combination of the Academic Mandarin with additional components that focus on academic writing, speaking and listening. This program acts as a foundation for those wishing to take the mandarin examination.

It is recommended for committed students who wish to improve their Mandarin for everyday use, university-bound students and working adults with a limited time for study. The fast-paced learning environment often facilitates comprehension.

Course Objective

Course Modules

It is a four week module with 15 hours of instruction each week.

Course Goals:

It aims to achieve the following goals:

  • Understand basic everyday expressions and short, simple texts
  • Engage in simple oral and written communication in order to provide and obtain information
  • Construct very basic and simple sentences
  • Demonstrate limited control of essential grammatical structures

Key Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • Interpret and control a narrow range of isolated words and phrases dealing with everyday topics including jobs, family, sports, food and drink, clothes, languages and nationalities
  • Locate information and understand main ideas in a short, simple written text.
  • Identify main ideas from a conversation or speech on a familiar topic
  • Construct a short guided paragraph on a familiar topic concerning home, family, friends and holidays.
  • Use the basic tenses including the present and past simple, and present continuous correctly.
  • Use the basic auxiliary verbs (am/is/are/was/were/can) and a range of regular and irregular verbs.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the essential grammatical features and functions including questions and negatives, plural nouns, frequency adverbs, possessives, pronouns and determiners.

It is a eight week module with 80 hours of instruction each month.

  • Understand simple texts and a range of high frequency vocabulary in context
  • Understand simple texts and a range of high frequency vocabulary in context
  • Describe aspects of personal and everyday life in both oral and written form
  • Produce short and simple connected texts on familiar topics
  • Demonstrate some control of essential grammatical structures with occasional inconsistencies

Key Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • Understand and extract the essential information from a written or spoken text on a familiar topic
  • Control a range of isolated words and phrases dealing with concrete everyday topics like hobbies, shopping, food and eating, weather and seasons, household goods, city and country life, etc.
  • Perform a variety of social functions including greetings, introductions and farewell
  • Describe people, places, likes and dislikes and daily routines in a series of simple phrases and sentences.
  • Construct short and simple descriptive paragraphs about people, places and events.
  • Write a clear topic sentence for a paragraph.
  • Use linking words and relative pronouns (and/but/because/so/when/until) to organize sentences in a paragraph.
  • Understand the form and function of the basic tenses including present simple and continuous, past simple and going to future
  • Use a range of auxiliary verbs (am/is/are/was/were/can/could) and regular and irregular verbs.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the essential grammatical features and functions including question words, comparatives and superlatives, infinitives of purpose, countable and uncountable nouns, determiners, possessives and prepositions of place.

Course Goals:

It aims to achieve the following goals:

  • Read and understand the main ideas of a variety of texts.
  • Participate effectively in a short conversation using appropriate and understand the main ideas in short oral communications.
  • Produce a range of text types using coherent and cohesive paragraphs in an adequately developed response.
  • Demonstrate control of a range of grammatical structures with minor inconsistencies.

Key Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • Select and implement appropriate learning strategies and resources
  • Monitor their own use of strategies and change them if necessary
  • Monitor the effectiveness of their own learning
  • Developing conversational skills, expressing ideas, and helping learners deal with problems and situations where they meet unpredictable language.

  • Read and understand a wide variety of extended texts
  • Listen to, understand, and participate in extended oral communications.
  • Construct a range of coherent and cohesive texts with multiple paragraphs in a fully developed response.
  • Demonstrate consistent control of a wide range of grammatical structures.

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

Speaking

  • Interact fluently with native speakers; errors occur, but it is clear what s/he is trying to say.
  • Communicate with reasonable competence in familiar contexts.
  • Initiate discourse and take his/her turn in an appropriate manner.
  • Give detailed accounts of experiences, describing feelings and reactions.
  • Develop an argument and explain a viewpoint
  • Give a clear, prepared presentation in class and answer follow-up questions with fluency.

Listening

  • Understand the main ideas of complex speech delivered in standard English on familiar topics
  • Understand much of what is said, but may find it difficult to participate effectively in discussion with several native speakers who do not modify their language.
  • Understand announcements on concrete and abstract topics spoken in standard dialect at normal speed.
  • Use a variety of strategies to achieve comprehension

Reading

  • Read with relative ease, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes; despite some mistakes, student keeps going without help.
  • Identify the content and relevance of stories, articles, and non-fiction texts on a wide range of topics.
  • Understand written instructions as expected at grade level.
  • Use effective strategies to achieve comprehension:

Writing

  • Write clear, detailed texts on a variety of subjects related to areas of interest
  • Write clear descriptions of real or imaginary events and experiences expressing feelings and attitudes.
  • Write a short, simple paragraph or report that develops an argument on topics of interest.
  • Correct errors if they have led to obvious misunderstandings.
  • Produce clearly intelligible writing that follows standard writing conventions.
  • Spell and punctuate with reasonable accuracy.

Vocabulary and Grammar

  • Develops a good range of vocabulary on most general topics.
  • Demonstrates generally accurate word choice.
  • Use grammar appropriately
  • Communicate in familiar contexts with good control with some interference from the first language.
  • Appropriately use articles, quantifiers, demonstratives, personal pronouns, question words, possessives, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, conjunctions, and particles (as appropriate for age peers).

  • Greater depth in grammar as well as pronunciation, reading, comprehension, vocabulary and vocabulary usage.
  • The use of everyday social expressions and idioms, and the context in which they are use, are also an integral part of the course.
  • Express ideas fluently, accurately, and appropriately in spoken at an advanced level.

Key Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, the students will be able

  • Express their views in written form with relative ease and a good degree of accuracy on a range of reasonably familiar and topical issues
  • Use appropriate communicative strategies in oral and written situations.
  • Express themselves orally with relative ease of comprehension and without undue hesitation in a range of familiar contexts.
  • Use effective reading strategies to extract key information from relatively complex texts.
  • Use effective listening strategies to identify key points in extended aural texts of a reasonably complex nature
  • Use digital devices and software such as smartphones and computers for the purposes of communication and expression in English

It is a eight week module with 80 hours of instruction each month.Students may continue this level after Upper Intermediate or pursue to study Preparation of IELTS instead.
