The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is an international standardised test of English language proficiency for people for whom English is a second language.

Understand the kind of IELTS test that you must take.

The Academic and General IELTS writing tests are two distinct formats. For those who wish to pursue higher education in an English-speaking setting, the Academic IELTS is appropriate. For those who wish to study at a lesser level or who must prove their English proficiency for employment or other reasons, the General exam is appropriate. The language and subjects covered on the two exams differ significantly from one another.

There are two tasks on the written exam. The first activity requires a minimum word count of 150 and is anticipated to take 20 minutes to complete. The second activity requires a minimum word count of 250 and is anticipated to take 40 minutes to complete. Task 2 carries twice as many marks as task 1, which is reflected in the word counts and time constraints.

If you write less words than the required minimum, you may face consequences. You can write as many words as you like, but be mindful of how much time you spend on it. Both tasks must be finished, and you must have adequate time to review and edit your work.

Make use of the appropriate format.
Remain focused because failing to respond fully or straying from the topic may also result in a zero. In no area of the written work may bullet points or note form be used. Naturally, it must be wholly original work that has not been plagiarized. All responses must be recorded on the accompanying answer sheet.

Carefully read the questions.
If you read the question correctly and answer the task poorly or incompletely, you will lose marks. Avoid making this typical error.

First Task

Your ability to recognize the most crucial and pertinent details in a graph, chart, table, or diagram is evaluated in Task 1. You should present a well-organized summary in a neutral or semi-formal tone utilizing precise, scholarly language

Pay attention to the primary idea

Write about the salient points of the material; candidates frequently err by going into undue detail while describing it. This is crucial since providing an incorrect response to the question could result in a mark deduction.

Work on your linguistic skills

When writing about anticipated trends, you must utilize phrases like these:

“Anticipated to.” By the end of 2019, for instance, sales of X are predicted to exceed 20,000.

When writing about a process, you must utilize the present tense since you are discussing a routine activity that never changes.

Saying anything “increased” or “decreased,” “fell” or “rose” is insufficient; you also need to specify how much. As an illustration:

Between the first and second quarters, sales modestly decreased.

It’s a good idea to use terms like “about,” “approximately,” “roughly,” and “just under or just over,” especially when reporting numbers. This is especially helpful in cases where a graph does not clearly show the precise amount. It is not necessary to waste effort figuring out the precise amount if it is unclear.

Go over the question once more with great attention.
As you read the homework carefully, make sure you answer it completely. Please limit your response to the task’s real topic. For instance, if the question is about a particular area of education, avoid writing about education in general or about an unrelated issue. Make sure the work is your own and stay on topic. (It is acceptable to cite sources to back up ideas; nevertheless, please include references when you are aware of them in order to give writers credit.)

Make use of your own concepts
Take care not to simply follow the instructions word for word. To show that you understand, you will be expected to paraphrase or use as many of your own words as you can.

It’s critical to build your concepts. Saying something like, “One of the benefits of studying abroad is that you can experience a different language and culture,” is insufficient. You must describe the advantages this will have, or why it is advantageous. As an illustration, consider the statement, “This gives you skills that you can use throughout your life.”

Make your response visually appealing.
Clearly divide your response into paragraphs. Before you start writing anything, make time to prepare for these. As an illustration: An essay about “advantages/disadvantages” would typically include four paragraphs:
