Course Overview
We offer professional english writing course for academic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is a four week module with 60 hours of instruction each month. This course is suitable for higher level students (pre-intermediate and above) wishing to progress their education. This is also ideal for university students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, wishing to improve their writing skills to enhance their grades.
Course Objective
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of essay writing, including introduction, body and conclusion.
- Introduce students to the practice of writing for academic purpose.
- Place equal or greater emphasis on macro-level composition skills.
- Write concise sentence.
- Improve academic and idiomatic vocabulary.
Key Learning Outcomes
Course learning outcomes have particular characteristics. They include knowledge, skills, and the application of that knowledge and skills which are defined as follows:
Knowledge
It is what a student knows and understands. It is described in terms of depth, breadth, kinds of knowledge and complexity, as follows:
- Depth of knowledge can be general or specialised
- Breadth of knowledge can range from a single topic to multi-disciplinary area of knowledge
- Kinds of knowledge range from concrete to abstract, from segmented to cumulative
- Complexity of knowledge refers to the combination of kinds, depth and breadth of knowledge.
Skills
It is what a student can do. Skills are described in terms of the kinds and complexity of skills and include:
- Cognitive and creative skills involving the use of intuitive, logical and critical thinking.
- Technical skills involving dexterity and the use of methods, materials, tools and instruments.
- Communication skills involving written, oral, literacy and numeracy skills
- Interpersonal skills.
Application of knowledge
Application of knowledge and skills is the context in which a student applies knowledge and skills:
- Application is expressed in terms of autonomy, responsibility and accountability
- The context may range from the predictable to the unpredictable, and the known to the unknown.
- Tasks may range from routine to non-routine.

Course Methodology
- Students should use a series of questions about the topic, using startling or unusual facts or figures, defining an important, subject-related term or quoting a well-known expert on the topic or a literary work.
- State your main idea clearly. It contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about.
- State the main idea of each paragraph. These are the topic sentences. They contain the focus of your paragraphs and tell your reader what each paragraph is going to be about. Topic sentences are usually located at the beginning of each paragraph. Each paragraph should flow smoothly from one to the next.
- Use supporting examples and details to make complicated ideas easier to understand. Do not assume that your reader will understand what you are trying to say.
- Use third person point-of-view (e.g. he, she, it and they). No first and second person points-of-view (e.g. I, you, we) are used in academic writing.
- Use formal voice. This means no slang, colloquialism
- End by restating your main idea, or summarizing important points, and then drawing a final conclusion for your reader.
- Proofread your work, making any necessary corrections to sentence structure, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
